  • question_answer
What will be the amount of energy absorbed when an electron jumps from first orbit to               second orbits? (If the value of energy in nth orbit of H-atom is expressed as \[{{E}_{n}}=-\frac{13.6}{{{n}^{2}}}eV)\]

    A)  - 3.4 eV

    B)         - 6.6 eV

    C)  -8.1eV

    D)         -10.2eV

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Energy of nth orbit of hydrogen atom \[{{E}_{n}}=-\frac{13.6}{{{n}^{2}}}eV\] The energy absorbed, when an electron jumps from the first energy level (n = 1) to second level (n = 2) \[=-13.6\times \left( \frac{1}{{{n}_{1}}^{2}}-\frac{1}{{{n}_{2}}^{2}} \right)\] \[=-13.6\left[ \frac{1}{{{(1)}^{2}}}-\frac{1}{{{(2)}^{2}}} \right]\] \[=-13.6\times \frac{3}{4}\] \[=-10.2\,eV\]
