  • question_answer
    Correct for \[{{N}_{2}}\] triple bond:

    A)  \[3\sigma \]

    B)         \[1\pi ,\,2\sigma \]

    C)         \[2\pi ,1\sigma \]

    D)         \[3\pi \]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Outer electronic configuration of nitrogen shows the presence of three unpaired electrons (i.e., \[1{{s}^{2}},\,2{{s}^{2}}2p_{x}^{1}2p_{y}^{1}2p_{z}^{1}\]). In the formation of \[{{N}_{2}}\] molecule, electron present in \[{{p}_{x}}\] orbital overlaps (let x-axis be the molecular axis) in the end-to-end manner, forming a \[\sigma \]-bond and the two electrons present in \[{{p}_{y}}\] and \[{{p}_{z}}\] orbital overlaps laterally forming two \[\pi \]-bonds.
