Which of the following is not a state function?

    A)  Work done at constant pressure

    B)  Enthalpy

    C)  Work done by conservative force

    D)  Work done by non-conservative force

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

State functions are path independent. Macroscopic properties which determine the state of a system are referred to as state variables or state functions or thermodynamic parameters. The change in the state properties depends only upon the initial and final states of the system, but it is independent of the manner in which the change has been brought about. In other words, the state properties do not depend upon a path followed. The state function is a property of thermodynamic system which has a definite value for a particular state of system. The change in the state function accompanying the change in the state of the system depends only on the initial and final states of the system. Pressure, temperature, volume, energy are state functions.    While    work    done    by non-conservative force is not a state function.
