The conversion of benzaldehyde into benzyl alcohol takes place by:

    A)  Fittig reaction

    B)  Wurtz Fitting reaction

    C)  Wurtz reaction

    D)  Cannizzaros reaction

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Benzaldehyde does not contain \[\alpha -\]hydrogen atom. Therefore it gives Cannizzaros reaction i.e. on reaction with alkali, it undergoes auto-oxidation, auto reduction and gives benzyl alcohol and potassium benzoate. \[\underset{\text{Benzaldehyde}\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\text{Benzaldehyde}}{\mathop{{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}CHO+{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}CHO}}\,\xrightarrow{KOH}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  \text{Benzyl}\,\,\text{alcohol} \\  (\operatorname{Reduction}\,\,Product) \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}C{{H}_{2}}OH}}\,\]
