The root mean square \[(rms)\] speed of oxygen molecules \[{{O}_{2}}\] at a certain temperature \[T\] (degree absolute) is\[\upsilon \]. If the temperature is doubled and oxygen gas dissociates into atomic oxygen. The \[rms\] speed:

    A)  becomes\[\upsilon /\sqrt{2}\]

    B)  remains\[\upsilon \]

    C)  becomes\[\sqrt{2}\upsilon \]

    D)  becomes\[2\upsilon \]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                    \[v=\sqrt{\frac{3RT}{M}}\]                                          ... (1) and        \[v=\sqrt{\frac{3R(2T)}{M/2}}\]                                ... (2) Dividing Eq. (2) by eq. (1), we obtained,                 \[\frac{v}{v}=2\]                 \[v=2v\]
