     The disease diphtheria is caused by a Gram positive bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It produces a toxin (exotoxin) in the respiratory system. The exotoxin is also absorbed into the circulatory system and distributed throughout the body, where it may cause destruction of kidney, cardiac and nervous tissues by inhibiting protein synthesis. Typical symptoms of diphtheria include, suffocation (problem in breathing), fever, nasal discharge and cough.
