A variable, opposite external potential \[({{E}_{ext}})\] is applied to the cell\[Zn|Z{{n}^{2+}}(1M)||C{{u}^{2+}}(1M)|Cu,\]potential 1.1 V. When \[{{E}_{ext}}<1.1V\] and \[{{E}_{ext}}>1.1V,\]respectively electrons flow from : JEE Main Online Paper (Held On 10 April 2015)

    A) anode to cathode and cathode to 1 anode

    B)  cathode to anode in both cases

    C)  cathode to anode and anode to cathode

    D)  anode to cathode in both cases

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

EMF of galvanic cell = 1.1volt If \[{{E}_{ext}}<EME\]then electron flows steadily from anode to cathode while If \[{{E}_{ext}}>EME\] there electron flows from cathode to anode as polarity is changed.
