In Triassic period of Mesozoic era, the primitive amphibians became extinct some of the reptilian groups returned to sea-life and some invaded air. Another important event, which took place late in Triassic period was the first appearance of mammals, which retained egg-laying habit. From the geological records it is concluded that first mammal or mammal-like forms appeared not later than middle Triassic or not earlier than lower Permian. The Tertiary period of Coenozoic era is characterized by the spectacular rise of mammals. The mammals of early tertiary period were small, short-legged and flat footed, their jaws were relatively longer than at present.
