Keratinized dead layer of skin is made up of

    A)  stratified squamous

    B)  simple cuboidal

    C)  simple columnar

    D)  stratified columnar

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Stratified squamous epithelium is seen in the adult human body. It may be keratinizing or non-keratinized.  In keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium the outer few layers contain a hard water proof protein in their cytoplasm. This protein is called keratin and the process of acquiring keratin is called keratinization. These cells are helpful in protection against abrasion and infection. This kind of epithelium is present on the surface exposed to air, eg, skin, hair and nails. Simple cuboidal epithelium consists of cuboidal cells with equal height, width and somewhat squarish in shape. It lines salivary and pancreatic ducts, vesicles of thyroid gland, etc. Simple columnar epithelium consists of tall and prismatic cells placed side by side in the form of columns with outer free surface of cells slightly broader. At some places columnar epithelium is seen with mucus secreting Goblet cells. In stratified columnar epithelium, the uppermost and the basal layer both consist of columnar cells. This type of epithelium is found in some part of pharynx and larynx, epiglottis etc.
