    Lateral roots arise from

    A)  pericycle

    B)  cortex

    C)  endodermis

    D)  stele

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Lateral roots originate from the pericycle. Pericycle is usually uniseriate and composed of thin walled parenchymatous cells. Cortex is many layered zone of rounded or oval cells with intercelltilar space. The starch grains are abundently present in the cortical cells of monocot roots.   Endodermis is innermost layer of cortex and form a definite ring arround the stele. All the tissue including and inside the pericycle constitute the stele.
