The gibberellin was first extracted from Gibberella fujikuroi, the parasitic fungus causing bakanae disease in rice plants. Yabuta and Sumuki isolated this substance in crystalline form and named it as gibberellin. Gelidium and Gracelaria are the members of red algae, they are famous for yielding a jelly- like substance, agar-agar which is used as culture medium, stabiliser and emulsifier.
