    Hormone preventing seed dormancy is:

    A)  auxin

    B)  gibberellin

    C)  ethylene

    D)  cytokinin

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Seed dormancy is internal inhibition or resistance of germination of otherwise a viable seed even under most favourable conditions. Among different plant growth hormones, gibberellin is the best one to overcome the natural dormancy of buds, tubers, seeds etc.,  and allow them to germinate. It also mobilises food reserve during seed .germination by inducing formation of hydrolytic enzymes. Cytokinin like gibberellins, can overcome seed dormancy of various types to an extent but is secondary to gibberellin action. Auxin has no role in breaking seed and bud dormancy. Ethylene, a gaseous hormone, breaks the dormancy of storage organs in certain cases.
