The longest phase of meiosis -I is:

    A)  metaphase-I

    B)  prophase-I

    C)  anaphase-I

    D)  telophase-I

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Prophase-I the first phase is the longest phase of meiosis-I. It shows the pairing of homologous    chromosomes    and    the interchange of hereditary material. It is divided into sub-stages like leptotene, zygotene, pachyfene, diplotene and diakinesis. Metaphase-I involves the arranging of the bivalents in the plane of equator forming equatorial plate. The centromere of each chromosome is directed towards the opposite poles and the arms of chromosome face the equatorial plate. Anaphase-I involves the movement of two members of each bivalent towards the  opposite pole by shortening of spindle fibres. There is actual reduction in number of chromosome as each pole receives half the number of chromosomes or haploid set of chromosome. Telophase-I involves the reappearance of nuclear envelope and nucleolus, resulting in the formation of two haploid daughter nuclei  with each chromosome having two chromatids, at each pole.
