    Fern gametophyte bears:

    A)  archegonia

    B)  antheridia

    C)  sporangia

    D)  both [a] and [b]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

'Gametophyfe' refers to haploid plant that produces gametes. In Terns', haploid spore on germination give rise to gametophyte. Which is also called, Prothallus. It bears both globose antheridia (male reproductive structure) and flask shaped archegonia (female reproductive structure). Antheridia develop early (i.e., protoandrous) and difficult to detect because they occur among the rhizoids. Antheridia release motile sperm cells under moist conditions which swim to the archegonia. Archegonia develop latter, close to the gametophyte apex. It produces egg (oosphere) which is .fertilized by the antherozoid (sperm cells). Sporangia (sing. sporangium) are the spore bearing organs and are differentiated into the capsule and the stalk. These special spore bearing and supporting structures develops on the under surface of the pinnules of the  mature leaves. The clusters of sporangia are called, sort (sing. sorus). Sporangia are - the diploid structure formed before meiosis, while gametophytes are haploid in nature, formed after meiotic division.
