     Capitulum (head) is a specialized inflorescence of sessile flowers or florets crowded together on a receptacle and usually surrounding by an involucre. It is characteristic of family Compositae (Asteraceae). e.g., Helianthus (sunflower), Tagetes (marigold) etc. In Liliaceae, inflorescence is usually racemose type, but flowers never arranged in umbels. In Tulipa, Lilium, Fritillaria, Gloriosa, flowers are solitary and terminal. In Papilionaceae e.g., Pisum, Arachis (groundnut), Crotolaria etc., inflorescence is racemose, the spike, the contracted raceme or head. In Rosaceae, there are great variations of inflorescence in different species. It may be cymose, terminal, solitary (Rosa indica), corymbose or racemose (Prunus persica; peach) etc.
