Krebs cycle begins with the reaction:

    A)  citric acid+ acetyl Co-A

    B)  oxaloacetic acid + pyruvic acid

    C)  oxaloacetic acid + Citric acid

    D)  oxaloacetic + acetyl Co-A

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Krebs cycle, discovered by Sir Hans Krebs, occur inside the matrix of mitochondria. The cycle is also named as citric acid cycle or Tricarboxylic Acid (TCA) cycle. Kreb cycle is stepwise oxidative and cyclic degradation of activated acetate derived from pyruvate. Acetyl Co-A (2C) (produced by oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate in mitochondria), is a substrate entrant for Krebs cycle. Oxaloacetate (4C) is an acceptor molecule of Krebs cycle. Acetyl Co-A combines with oxalo-acetate in the presence of condensing enzyme citrate synthetase to form tricarboxylic 6-carbon compound called citric acid. It is the first product of Krebs cycle.
