During the process of blood coagulation vitamin-K helps in the:

    A)  formation of thromboplastin

    B)  formation of prothrombin

    C)  conversion of prothrombin to thrombin

    D)  conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Vitamin-K   (phylloquinone)   is   the anti-haemorrhagic vitamin or factor, reported and named by a Danish scientist. Dam as Coagulation Factor (Danish term). Who got the Nobel Prize for it in 1943. It is necessary for the synthesis of prothrombin (the precursor of thrombin) in the liver for normal clotting of blood. Thus, vitamin-K helps in blood clotting, prevention of haemorrhage and excessive bleeding in wounds. Vramin-K deficiency causes a decrease in prothrombin content of the blood, resulting faulty blood clotting and thus haemorrhages or tendency  of bleeding is observed. Thromboplastin is a lipoprotein factor, released by injured tissues and blood platelets. These factors combine with \[\text{C}{{\text{a}}^{\text{2+}}}\] and protein of blood plasma to form an enzyme prothrombinase       which   catalyze prothrombin    into active protein, thrombin, in presence of \[\text{C}{{\text{a}}^{\text{2+}}}\] Fibrinogen (a soluble plasma protein) is     converted into fibrin in presence of thrombin.
