    Sertoli cells are involved in:

    A)  respiration

    B)  nutrition of sperms

    C)  excretion

    D)  development of sex organs

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Sertoli cells or nurse cells are large pyramidal cells present in the wall of seminiferous tubules (germinal epithelium) of human testes. Sertoli cells secrete Androgen Binding Protein (ABP) that concentrates testosterone in the seminiferous tubules. These cells also secrete another protein inhibin which suppresses FSH synthesis. Sertoli cells nourish the developing sperms. Hence, called, nurse cells. Interstitial cells or Leydigs cells in between the seminiferous tubules in the connective tissue, secrete androgens (e.g., Testosterone)-male sex hormones leading to the development of sex organs. Nephrons are the structural and functional units of kidneys and thus linked with excretion.
