A characteristic feature of ovary of Brassica  compesrris is:

    A)  presence of replum

    B)  axile placentation

    C)  epigynous

    D)  multilocular nature

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The ovary in Brassica compestris is bicarpellary, syncarpous, superior and unilocular but becomes bilocular due to development of false septum (replum). In axile placentation margins of carpels fold inwardly fusing together in centre of ovary to form a single central placenta, ovary is divided into as many compartments (loculi) as there are carpels e.g., Asphodelus, Hibiscus. Epigynous flower having the various whorls adnate to ovary thus apparently inserted in ovary. Ovary is inferior e.g., Hamelia, Coriandrum. Locule is the chamber. The ovary is multilocular in Citrus.
