Sharpeys perforating fibres are related with:

    A)  contraction of muscles

    B)  relaxation of muscles

    C)  fixing of teeth

    D)  none of the above

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Sharpes perforating fibres are collagenous fibres that pass from peridontal membrane into the cementum and jaw bones, thus fixing the teeth firmly in sockets. Each striated muscle consists of numerous muscle fibres. Two types of fibres are recognised in most striated muscle-white fibre and red fibre. Most part of each muscle-fibre contains several thousands myofibrils or sarcostyles. With the help of electron microscopy Huxley and others elucedated the mechanism of contraction and relaxation of straited muscle fibres. He observed that contraction is brought about by sliding movement of actin filament over myosin  filaments. If there is no further stimulation the actin filaments - slip back to their normal condition bringing about the relaxation of muscle fibre.
