A steel wire can support a maximum load of w before reaching its elastic limit. How much load can another wire, made out of identical steel, but with a radius one half the radius of the first wire, support before reaching its elastic limit?

    A)  \[w\]

    B)  \[\frac{w}{2}\]

    C)  \[\frac{w}{4}\]

    D)  \[4\,w\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    The elastic limit of steel = support the maximum B load Load  \[=Y\,\alpha \,\,\Delta t\pi {{r}^{2}}\] Then,  \[w=Y\pi \,\alpha \,\Delta t{{R}^{2}}\]                 ...(i) load     \[=Y\pi \,\alpha \,\,\Delta t{{\left( \frac{R}{2} \right)}^{2}}\] \[=\frac{y\pi \,\alpha \,\Delta t{{R}^{2}}}{4}=\frac{\omega }{4}\]
