A faulty thermometer has its fixed point marked as 5° and 95°. The temperature of a body as measured by the faulty thermometer is 59°.  The  correct temperature of the body on Celsius scale is :

    A)  40°C

    B)  60°C

    C)  20°C

    D)  30°C

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                    Let  x be the temperature measured by faulty thermometer \[\therefore \] \[\frac{\text{C-0}}{\text{100}}\text{=}\frac{\text{x-lower}\,\text{fixed}\,\text{point}}{\begin{align}   & \text{number}\,\text{of}\,\text{divisions}\,\text{between} \\  & \text{the two fixed points} \\ \end{align}}\] or            \[\frac{C}{100}=\frac{59-5}{95-5}\]                 \[\frac{C}{100}=\frac{54}{90}\] \[\therefore \]  \[C={{60}^{o}}C\]
