A capacitor of 20 \[\mu \]F and charged up to 500 V, is connected in parallel to another capacitor of 10 \[\mu \] charged to 200 V. The common potential will be :

    A)  600 V

    B)  400 V

    C)  100 V

    D)  200 V

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

                    The common potential is given by \[V=\frac{{{C}_{1}}{{V}_{1}}+{{C}_{2}}{{V}_{2}}}{{{C}_{1}}+{{C}_{2}}}\] Here,    \[{{C}_{1}}=20\mu F=20\times {{10}^{-6}}F\] \[{{V}_{1}}=500V,\,{{C}_{2}}=10\mu F=10\times {{10}^{-6}}F,\] \[{{V}_{2}}=200V\] or \[V=\frac{(20\times {{10}^{-6}}\times 500)+(10\times {{10}^{-6}}\times 200)}{20\times {{10}^{-6}}+10\times {{10}^{-6}}}\] \[V=400V\]
