An object is focused by a microscope. A glass slab of thickness 2.5 cm is introduced between object and microscope. If the refractive index of slab is 1.5 then by what distance should be microscope be shifted to focus the object again?

    A)  0.83

    B)  0.94

    C)  0.64

    D)  0.15

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The thickness of glass slab is \[t=2.5\text{ }cm\] and its the refractive index is \[\mu =15\] Now, shift due to glass slab \[D=\left( 1-\frac{1}{\mu } \right)t=\left( 1-\frac{1}{15} \right)2.5\]     \[=\frac{1}{3}\times \frac{25}{10}=\frac{25}{30}=\frac{5}{6}\]     \[=0.83\,cm\] Thus, microscope should be shifted 0.83 cm to focus the object again.
