The sensory neurons of a vertebrate retina are

    A)   rods and cones

    B)  ganglion cells

    C)  amacrine cells

    D)  bipolar cells

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The vertebrate retina contains two kinds of photoreceptors called rods and cones. Rods are responsible for black and white vision when the illumination is dim, while cones are responsible for high visual acuity (sharpness) and colour vision. Humans have about 100 millions rods and 3 millions cones in each retina. The photopigment of rods is called rhodopsin and of cones is called photopsin.
