  • question_answer
Two capillary tubes of  same diameter are put vertically one each in two liquids whose relative densities are 0.8 and 0.6 and surface tensions are 60 and 50 dyne cm respectively ratio of heights of liquids in the two tubes is

    A)  10/9

    B)  3/10

    C)  10/3

    D)  9/10

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Height of liquid column rises in a capillary tube is given by, \[h=\frac{2T}{r\rho g}\]                 \[\therefore \]  \[\frac{{{h}_{1}}}{{{h}_{2}}}=\frac{2{{T}_{1}}}{r{{\rho }_{1}}g}\times \frac{r{{\rho }_{2}}g}{2{{T}_{2}}}=\frac{{{T}_{1}}}{{{T}_{2}}}\times \frac{{{\rho }_{2}}}{{{\rho }_{1}}}\]                                 \[=\frac{60}{50}\times \frac{0.6}{0.8}=\frac{36}{40}=\frac{9}{10}\]
