    Double fertilization means fusion of

    A)  one of the polar nuclei with the other  one male gamete with egg cell

    B)  one of the male gamete with polar nuclei and other with antipodal cells

    C)  one of the male gamete with secondary nucleus and the other male gamete with egg cell

    D)  one antipodal cell with egg cell and synergid cell with antipodal cell

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The nuclei of both the male gametes are released in the embryo sac. One male gamete fuses with the egg to form the diploid zygote. This process is called syngamy or generative fertilization. The diploid zygote finally develops into embryo. The other male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus. The process is called triple fusion or vegetative fertilization. These two acts of fertilization constitute the process of double fertilization.
