Cell is the structural and functional unit of life. Robert Hooke (1665) first studied the cell. Cells are of two types (i) Prokaryotic cells (Gk, Pro = primitive "before', karyon = nucleus)-prokaryotic cells are primitive. They have only a single membrane, the plasma membrane or cell membrane. In prokaryotic cell, the nucleus is without a nuclear membrane. These have ribosomes, but these are slightly smaller, ie, 70S type. (ii) Eukaryotic cells (Gk, Eu = good or well, karyon = nucleus)-Eukaryotic cells have a definitely organized nucleus with a definite nuclear membrane, surrounding the genetic material and membrane bound cell organelles such as mitochondria, lysosomes, chloroplast etc. These have ribosomes but 80S type.
