  • question_answer
A potential differences of V is applied at the ends of a copper wire of length \[l\]and diameter d. On doubling only d, drift velocity

    A)  becomes two times

    B)  becomes half

    C)  does not change

    D)  becomes one-fourth

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Drift velocity \[{{v}_{d}}=\frac{I}{neA}\] \[\because \] Specific resistance \[\rho =\frac{RA}{l}\] or            \[A=\frac{\rho l}{R}\] \[\therefore \]  \[{{v}_{d}}=\frac{IR}{ne\rho l}\] Thus, \[{{v}_{d}}\] is independent of diameter of wire. Hence, drift velocity will not change.
