Pairing of homologous chromosomes takes place in

    A)  pachytene

    B)  zygotene

    C)  diplotene

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

In zygotene, homologous chromosomes pair up. This process is called synapsis. Each pair is called a bivalent. Number of bivalents is half the number of individual chromosomes. Each member of the pair is of the same length, their centromeres are in the same positions and they usually have the same number of genes arranged in the same order. Synapsis when begins at the centromere and proceeds towards the ends, is called procentric and when begins at end proceeds towards centromere, called proterminal.
