The disease is caused by a rod-shaped, non-motile Bacillus, Pasteurella pestis and it is carried by a rat to rat by rat fleas, chiefly Xenopsylla cheopis. Its incubation period is 2-6 days. The disease is characterized by high fever,   prostration   and   painful   bubo (enlargement) of lymph nodes.
