The ionic radius of which of the following would be maximum?

    A)  \[{{C}^{4-}}\]

    B)  \[{{N}^{3-}}\]

    C)  \[{{O}^{2-}}\]

    D)  \[M{{g}^{2+}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    \[{{C}^{4}}>\] \[{{N}^{3-}}>\] \[{{O}^{2-}}>\] \[M{{g}^{2+}}\]
    Number of electrons \[10\] \[10\] \[10\] \[10\]
    Number of protons \[6\] \[7\] \[8\] \[12\]
All the ions contain same number of electrons. Due to presence of greatest number of protons in \[M{{g}^{2+}},\] its effective nuclear charge \[({{Z}_{eff}})\] is highest and therefore, its radius is smallest. \[{{C}^{4-}}\]contains smallest number of protons hence, its effective nuclear charge is lowest and therefore its ionic radius is longest.
