Which of the following carbonium ion is most stable?

    A)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,{{H}_{2}}\]

    B)  \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,\]

    C)  \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,H\]

    D)  \[C{{H}_{3}}\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,{{H}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

As the number of alkyl group attached to the positively charged carbon atom increases, the number of hyperconjugative or no bond contributing structures increases and thus, the stability increases. Benzyl carbonium ion is more stable than secondary carbocation due to resonance stabilisation but less stable than tertiary carbocation.
