Which of the following are the indicators of pollution?

    A)  Lichen

    B)  Fungi

    C)  Algae

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Lichens provide an outstanding example of mutualism, the kind of symbiotic association between fungus and an alga, ie, lichens are dual or composite organisms which consist of fungal partner (mycobiont) and algal partner (phycobiont). They are extremely sensitive to pollutants in the atmosphere and thus they can be used as bio-indicators of air quality. Their sensitivity results from their ability to absorb substances dissolved in rain and dew. Fungi is a group of eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, non-photosynthetic, heterotrophic organisms of diverse forms, sizes, physiology and mode of reproduction. Algae is a group of chlorophyll bearing, photosynthetic, autotrophic thalloid plants whose body is not differentiated into true roots, stems and leaves.
