    Double fertilization is found in

    A)  bryophytes

    B)  angiosperms

    C)  gymnosperms

    D)  pteridophytes

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

S.G. Nawaschin (1898) was the first to .show that both the sperms released by a pollen tube are involved in fertilization and they fertilize two different components of embryo sac. This phenomenon is unique to angiosperms and is called double fertilization. The nucleus of one sperm fuses with egg nucleus (syngamy) and the nucleus of second sperm (uses with secondary nucleus (triple fusion) and form endosperm. In bryophytes/ the secondary nucleus (two polar nuclei) is absent therefore, the double fertilization is not known. In pteridophytes and gymnospenns a single egg cells is fertilized i.e., secondary nucleus is absent therefore, double fertilization is not known.
