The canal system is characteristic feature of

    A)  helminthes

    B)  coelenterates

    C)  sponges

    D)  echinoderms

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Sponges have canal system. Specialized collar cells are present in sponges. Beating of flagella of collar cells produce a water current/through which these obtain nutrition, respiration etc. Canal system is of ascon type (simplest, as in Leucosolenia); sycon type (as in Sycon) and leucon type very complex, (as in Spongilla). Characteristic feature of coelenterates is presence of nematocyst. Which helps in adhesion, offence, defence and food capturing. Helminthes are bilaterally symmetrical animals with triploblastic (ie, body has ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm) body eg, Ascaris, Taenia. Echinoderms are mostly marine animals with spiny surface of the body eg, Starfish.
