The presence of xylem vessels, companion cells and double fertilization are the characteristic features of angiosperms. Vessels are very long tubular structure formed by fusion of several cells called vessel elements. The vessel elements are shorter and wider than the tracheids. Companion cells are thin-walled elongated cells associated with each sieve tube. Both are connected with simple pits. Each companion cell is living contains dense protoplasm and a large elongated nucleus. Vessels are present in some pteridophytes (Selaginella, Equisetum, Pteridium, Marsilea) and three gymnosperms (Gnetum, Ephedra, Welwitschia) although these are commonly absent in them.
