Hormone prolactin is secreted by :

    A)  posterior pituitary

    B)  thyroid

    C)  anterior pituitary

    D)  hypothalamus

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Prolactin hormone or luteotropic hormone or mammotropin hormone is secreted from anterior lobe of pituitary. Its main function is to activate growth of breast during pregnancy and secretion of mammary glands after child birth. Oxytocin and vasopressin are secreted from posterior lobe of pituitary. Oxytocin promotes contraction of the uterine muscle and laciating breast, therefore, called birth hormone and milk ejecting hormone. The vasopressin (ADH) increases the reabsorption of water in the distal convoluted tubule, collecting tubule and collecting duct. The thyroid gland secretes the hormones thyroxine and calcitonin. They regulate the metabolic rate of body and thus maintain basal metabolic rate and lowers the calcium level by suppressing release of calcium ions from the bones. Neurohormones are secreted by the neurosecretory cells of hypothalamus.
