    Raffinose is:

    A)  monosaccharides

    B)  disaccharides

    C)  trisaccharides

    D)  polysaccharides

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Carbohydrates are known as saccharides and are formed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They may be divided into four classes: [a] Monosaccharide: These cannot be hydrolysed into still smaller units, and composed of 3-7 carbon atoms, e.g., glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose [b] Disaccharides: These are formed by condensation reaction between two monosaccharides by forming glycosidic bond. e.g., maltose, lactose, sucrose. [c] Trisaccharides: These are composed of three monosaccharides. Raffinose is a common trisaccharide found in plant. On hydrolysis it yields one molecule each of glucose, fructose and glactose. [d] Polysaccharides: These are polymers of monosaccharides. These are water insoluble carbohydrates and are considered to be non-sugars e.g., starch, glycogen, cellulose, pectin, hemicellulose, inulin etc.
