    Velamen tissues are associated with:

    A)  haustorial function

    B)  assimilation

    C)  absorption of moisture

    D)  nutrition

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The epiphytes have aerial roots, which are covered by a hygroscopic velamen tissue. They absorb water from the atmosphere. The parasitic plants penetrate into the host through sucking or haustorial roots and develop a connection between conducting system of two plants e.g., Cuscuta. In some plants like Tinospora the aerial roots become green and perform the photosynthetic functions. Such assimilatory roots are also found in Podostemon. In some plants the roots store food material and thus become nutritive in function e.g., radish, turnip, Mirabilis, sweet potato etc.
