The critical angle for a medium is \[{{45}^{o}}\]. The refractive index will be :

    A)  \[\frac{2}{\sqrt{3}}\]

    B)  \[\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\]

    C)  \[\sqrt{2}\]

    D)  \[\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\]-

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The critical angle [C] is that angle of incidence for which the angle of refraction becomes\[{{90}^{o}}\]. It is given by,                 \[\sin C=\frac{1}{\mu }\] or            \[\mu =\frac{1}{\sin C}\] or            \[\mu =\frac{1}{\sin {{45}^{o}}}\] \[(\because \,C={{45}^{o}})\] or            \[\mu =\frac{1}{1/\sqrt{2}}=\sqrt{2}\] Note: Critical angle increases with increase in temperature of medium.
