Cohesion-tension theory regarding ascent of sap was given by :

    A)  Dixon and Jolly

    B)  J.C. Bose

    C)  Christian Wolf

    D)  Godlewski

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Cohesion-tension theory or theory of transpiration pull for ascent of sap was proposed by Dixon and Jolly (1884). It is based on three basic assumptions: (i) Cohesion or tensile strength between water molecules. (ii) Continuity of water column. (iii) Transpiration pull. J.C. Bose (1923) gives the pulsation theory. This theory believes that the innermost cortical layer of the root absorb water from outer side and pump it into xylem channels.
