The intercept made by a line on y-axis is double to the intercept made by it on x-axis and if it passes through\[(1,2),\]then its equation is

    A) \[2x+y=4\]

    B)        \[2x+y+4=0\]

    C) \[2x-y=4\]

    D)         \[2x-\text{ }y+4=0\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Let intercepts made by the required line on \[x\]and \[y\]axes are a and 2a respectively. The equation of line is \[\frac{x}{y}+\frac{y}{2a}=1\] Since, this line passes through the point (1, 2), so                                 \[\frac{1}{a}+\frac{2}{2a}=1\]                 \[\Rightarrow \]               \[2=a\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[a=2\] Thus, the required equation of line is                                 \[\frac{x}{y}+\frac{y}{4}=1\]                 \[\Rightarrow \]               \[2x+y=4\]
