Which of the following gives RNC when treated with \[CHC{{l}_{3}}\]and KOH?

    A) \[RN{{H}_{2}}\]

    B)         \[{{R}_{2}}NH\]

    C)         \[{{R}_{4}}{{N}^{+}}C{{l}^{-}}\]

    D)         \[{{R}_{3}}N\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Only primary amines, when treated with chloroform and alkali (KOH), gives isocyanide (RNC), the bad smelling compound. This reaction is called carbylamine reaction. Among the given amines, \[\text{RN}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\]is a primary amine, so forms RNC when treated with \[\text{CHC}{{\text{l}}_{\text{3}}}\] and KOH. \[RN{{H}_{2}}+CHC{{l}_{3}}+3KOH\]        \[\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  alkyl\,iso- \\  cyanide \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{RNC}}\,+3\,KCl+3{{H}_{2}}O\]
