Due to Doppler effect, the shift in wavelength observed is \[0.1\,\overset{\text{o}}{\mathop{\text{A}}}\,,\] for a star producing wavelength \[6000\overset{\text{o}}{\mathop{\text{A}}}\,\]. The velocity of recession of star will be

    A)  \[2.5\,km{{s}^{-1}}\]

    B)  \[10\,km{{s}^{-1}}\]

    C)             \[5\,km{{s}^{-1}}\]

    D)         \[20\,km{{s}^{-1}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    The spectral shift \[(z)=\frac{\lambda -{{\lambda }_{0}}}{{{\lambda }_{0}}}\] Also, \[z=\frac{\text{Velocity}\,\text{of}\,\text{recession}\,\text{of}\,\text{star(v)}}{\text{Velocity}\,\text{of}\,\text{light}\,\text{(c)}}\] \[\therefore \]  \[v=\frac{\lambda -{{\lambda }_{0}}}{{{\lambda }_{0}}}\times c\]                 \[=\frac{0.1}{6000}\times 3\times {{10}^{8}}=5000\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]                 \[=5\,km\,{{s}^{-1}}\]
