In a closed organ pipe which of the following notes is not present, if fundamental note is 50 Hz?

    A)  100 Hz

    B)  150 Hz

    C)                         250 Hz

    D)         None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In a pipe closed at one end and open at the other, the natural frequencies of oscillations form a harmonic series that includes only odd integer  multiples  of  the  fundamental frequency. Thus, \[{{f}_{n}}=n{{f}_{1}}\]  \[(n=1,3,5,....)\]                 or            \[{{f}_{n}}=50,150,250,....\] Hence, 100 Hz (even) frequency is not present in this series. Note: Here, 50 Hz is fundamental, 150 Hz is first overtone or third harmonic and 250 Hz is second overtone or fifth harmonic.
