The red colour of rhodophyta is due to the preponderance of

    A)  phycobilins

    B)  phycocyanin

    C)  phycoerythrin

    D)  none of these.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

: Rhodophyta is a division of the thallophyta (the red algae). They are distinguished by their sexual reproduction, in which non-flagellate male gametes are transported to lodge against the female sex-organ (carpogonium). In some the zygote develops directly into spores, but in most the development of the spores is indirect. There are no flagellate asexual spores. The red algae are red in colour due to the presence of phycoerythrin pigment. Phycocyanin, chlorophyll a, carotene and xanthophylls are also found , but in small quantity. Chlorophyll d is present in place of chlorophyll b. The red algae, are not always red, many are black, violet, brownish, yellow or even green.
