The small segment of DNA which helps to detect the presence of a gene or a long DNA sequence in biological system is termed as

    A)  DNA walker

    B)  \[cDNA\]

    C)  DNA clone

    D)  DNA probe.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: Probe DNA is the DNA segment which is made highly radioactive for use in molecular hybridization studies. The radioactivity is usually introduced either during synthesis by reverse transcriptase or in the case of an existing fragment, by nick translation (method for uniform radioactive labelling of DNA in vitro). Each species somewhere on its chromosome has a unique DNA sequence that distinguishes it from every other species. This sequence when identified can be used as a DNA probe. DNA probes have been used successfully to identify a wide variety of pathogens, from simple viruses to pathogenic bacteria and parasites. DNA probe can also be used in a hybridization reaction to recognize pathogen-specific DNA released from clinical samples.
