Mutualistic symbiosis of a fungus with the roots of a higher plant is termed as

    A)  protists

    B)  mycorrhiza

    C)  lichens

    D)  moulds.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

: Mycorrhiza is a fungal association with roots of higher plants showing mutualism, e.g. Rhizoctonia, Phoma, Boletus etc. live in association of roots of higher plants i.e., Pinus, cedrus, orchid etc. Fungal mycelia derive nutrition from the host and in turn, the hyphae substitute for root hairs of the host thus helping in efficient absorption of moisture and minerals from humid atmosphere or upper moist stratum of soil.
