    : The minamata affected people shows the symptoms of fatigue, numbness in arms and legs, metallic taste in mouth, diarrhoea. For the first time, in the Japanese coastal town of Minamata the illness began to occur in birds, cats and particularly families of fishermen. A number of people died also. Affected persons lived in small area and their main diet came from fish from Minamata bay. Actually the mercury was released in water effluent that flowed into the bay from a plastic factory. By microbial action, inorganic mercury was converted into methyl mercury. Fishes absorb it from water. Methyl mercury damages brain cells.
